What to do if you have a safeguarding concern
Information on CHAD (Children’s Advice and Duty Service) and Safeguarding Concerns
What is CHAD?
CHAD (Children’s Advice and Duty Service) is a service that provides advice and guidance to professionals and members of the public who have concerns about the welfare or safety of a child. It is typically run by the local authority’s children’s services department and acts as the first point of contact for safeguarding referrals.
If a child is at risk of harm, CHAD ensures that the right support and intervention are provided, working closely with social workers, health professionals, schools, and other relevant agencies.
What Can Parents Do if They Have a Safeguarding Concern?
If you are a parent and have concerns about a child’s safety or wellbeing, here are the steps you can take:
1. Recognise the Signs of Abuse or Neglect
Child abuse can take different forms, including:
- Physical abuse – Hitting, burning, or physically harming a child.
- Emotional abuse – Bullying, threats, or making a child feel unloved.
- Sexual abuse – Any form of inappropriate sexual behaviour towards a child.
- Neglect – Failing to provide basic needs like food, shelter, or medical care.
2. Speak to Someone You Trust
If you are unsure whether to report a concern, you can speak to:
- A teacher or staff member at your child’s school
- A GP, nurse, or health visitor
